2: NEVER TOLD STORIES

One of the reasons for starting this podcast during lockdown, was catching up with many friends, who I saw regularly and then all of sudden became cut off from. For me, one of those is- Questlove! One of favorite colleagues at the “Tonight Show,” we always sharing jokes, messing around, talking about comedy and music, etc. And I missed him and the band and life at 30 Rock. So after a few exchanges and changes of dates, we finally hooked it up on May 22nd to catch up, and it was a lot of fun! You probably know Questlove as the drummer for The Roots and for the Tonight Show, but what you might not know, that’s he’s written four books, become an acclaimed chef, become of the country’s premiere DJs, has a popular podcast himself, “Questlove Supreme,” and recently became an award winning documentary director when his documentary “Summer of Soul” won a bunch of awards at the Sundance Film Festival. How he had any time for me, was shocking.

We start to talk about our lives since lockdown started, Quest talked about living on a commune type farm upstate, how our day to day have changed, our eating habits, etc. We then get into it about the perils of DJing live on Instagram, performing with other artists while you’re ‘beefing,” how my twins are now singing “Baby Come Back,” wearing “Theives Oil,” how no one is Chicago uses ketchup, and we got into some theories on SKA music. We also got into it about how The Roots were the house band for 2 TV shows that only made it to pilots, and our lost embarrassing TV footage from many years ago. Quest also tells some great stories about his trip to Graceland, and one about a misunderstanding with Stevie Wonder. 

I there was a terrible echo for a bit until Questlove fixed it by putting on some headphones, and after a ton of sound editing work we couldn’t get rid of the echo. So we have this pod start 17 minutes into the conversation.

This is a great, and very loose conversation, and it definitely bears a Part II, which I’m sure will be coming at some point.
